Troubleshooting

If you're having issues:

Fix Camera Permissions by Browser

Most "webcam not working" reports turn out to be a blocked site-level permission. Here's how to reset it in each major browser:

Chrome and Edge

  1. Click the padlock (or tune) icon to the left of the address bar.
  2. Choose Site settings.
  3. Set Camera to Allow and reload the page.
  4. If the camera still fails, go to chrome://settings/content/camera (or edge://settings/content/camera) and confirm this site is not in the Block list.

Firefox

  1. Click the padlock icon, then Connection secure → More information → Permissions.
  2. Uncheck Use default for Use the Camera and pick Allow.
  3. Or go to about:preferences#privacy, scroll to Permissions → Camera → Settings, and remove any block.

Safari (macOS)

  1. Open Safari → Settings → Websites → Camera.
  2. Find this site in the list and set it to Allow.
  3. If no prompt appears, also check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera and ensure Safari is toggled on.

Safari on iPhone / iPad

  1. Go to Settings → Safari → Camera and set it to Ask or Allow.
  2. Verify Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera → Safari is enabled.

OS-Level Camera Access

If the browser prompt never appears, the operating system itself may be blocking camera access:

Before a Video Call

Running a webcam test alone only checks half the call experience. Before an important meeting, also verify the microphone and audio output — most dropped or failed calls come from input or output problems, not the camera. For video quality in bandwidth-limited situations, check your connection speed as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I allow my browser to access my webcam?

When you start the test, your browser will display a permission popup asking to access your camera. Click 'Allow' to grant access. If you previously denied permission, go to your browser's site settings and change the camera permission for this site to 'Allow'.

Why is my webcam showing a black screen?

A black screen usually means another application is using the webcam, the camera has a privacy shutter or cover, or drivers need updating. Close other apps that may use the camera (Zoom, Teams, Skype), check for a physical privacy cover, and ensure webcam drivers are installed.

Can I test multiple cameras connected to my computer?

Yes, if you have multiple cameras (built-in laptop webcam and external USB webcam), you can switch between them using the camera selector in the test interface. Each connected camera will appear as a selectable option.

Is my webcam video recorded or stored anywhere?

No. This webcam test runs entirely in your browser. No video data is sent to any server or stored anywhere. Snapshots you take are saved locally to your device only when you choose to download them.
